Fragrant Chicken Wonton Soup

My first take on the delicious chicken wonton soup! Olé!

Just like you even I was new to this soup. Its only recently that I have come across this fragrant soup and I thought why not give it a try at home. They are very easy to make and also very tasty with just a couple of ingredients. Normally soups can be very blend if not seasoned or made properly. Sometimes even with all the right sauces, you can mess up the taste if not used accordingly.

I decided to make this soup because I had a lot of chicken bones remains in the fridge. And I could not bear throwing all these delicious flavours in the bin.So I decided to make my own chicken stock so that it can be used in the wonton soup.I have normally never made chicken stock as well as wontons. Well there is a beginning to everything, you’re right. Just like, even you can make these at home at yours.

For a basic chicken stock recipe all you need is basically the chicken bones/carcass and the following steps :

  • Place chicken carcass in medium sized pot and just cover with water.
  • Bring to boil and then simmer over a low-medium hear for one hour.
  • Skim fat from the top of the broth.
  • Add onion, carrot, garlic, ginger, coriander leaves or parsley and continue to simmer for 2 hours, stirring once or twice.

.In the meantime you can start making your wontons. For the wontons fillings you will need :

  • Ground chicken
  • Garlic,
  • Ginger
  • Soy sauce
  • Oyster sauce
  • Fish sauce
  • Chili
  • Black pepper powder
  • Salt as per taste.
  • Grated carrots
  • Coriander/Parsley for garnish

Normally you can buy ready made wonton sheets which I don’t think is available in the supermarkets at mine. That is why I had to make my very own from scratch and thus this uneven wobbly look. 😛 Oh god I made only 3 and am already losing hopes. lol. Making them from scratch is a little bit time consuming, true. I had to cut into the proper squares and also make sure I fold them equally and still they looked like this. Aaah practice makes perfect right? Hope it makes the next ones better. 😀

After having made the wontons, all you need is to drop them to a boil and let them cook. I normally cooked them in the chicken stock itself. I put the stock to a simmer and then dropped the wontons and let them cooked until they are very soft and tender. You will know when they are done because they tend to float on the surface of the broth.I then used the same broth as soup for the wontons. Serve hot along with some chili oil or sauce. And dig in like pigs which I normally do.Haha
