Mondays are back!
I love how Meat Free Mondays are taking up the lead lately with all the amazing people bringing in their support to the campaign. It is indeed very beautiful to see how people have started to look deeper into what they eat and also how they shop. They say ”You are what you eat”, which is indeed very true. The much importance and care you give to what you put inside the body,the more rewarding will be the results. There are so many ways you can incorporate alternatives into your diet and also reduce the consumption of meat during a week. So can be done with Jackfruit! Instead of having a slow cooked pulled pork on a Monday, you can try a pulled pork the Jackfruit style! True sounds so weird but then trust me it is equally yummy with the BBQ sauce in it. However for today, sadly enough this is not what we are going to cook in the kitchen. As you all know my current theme is to bring out the best of our Mauritian traditional dishes. And so is the Jackfruit Curry. I added a little extra that is, the Brown Chana for a more fulfilling taste but then you can add Chickpeas. It will be equally yummy and comforting.
This Curry brings back a lot of sweet memories because I can still recall the flavours and the freshness of it back then. Long before people were growing there own vegetables in the back yard. And also the abundance were incredible.So packed with good nutrients and freshness as well.I recall having the best Jackfruit Curry at my GrandMa mostly. She used to be making them with big chunks of potatoes along with Brown Chana/Chickpeas. And you would literally lick your fingers,trust me. GrandMa’s are the best when it comes to making any Curry. So early morning,GrandMa would go in the back garden and get the best of Jackfruit right from the tree.I would sit next to her watching attentively on how she would proceed with the cutting up. Oh I still struggle with the cutting up and de-seeding of the Jackfruit. As much as I love them,the process to getting them into chunks is quite discouraging. But they say every good things take time. Not much we can do here if we want to eat Jackfruit,can we? Ha.
Preparation time : 30 mins
Cooking time : 45 mins
- 1/2 a Jackfruit cut into chunks
- 1 cup of Brown Chana/Chickpeas
- 1/2 cup of finely diced onions
- 2 cups of chopped Tomatoes
- 1 tsp of Garlic/Ginger paste
- 1/2 a tsp of Fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 tsp of Cumin seeds
- 3 tsp of Garam Masala/ Curry powder
- 2 Cloves
- 1 tsp of Red dry chilli flakes
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
- Vegetable oil
- Put your Brown Chana to soak overnight. Or you can use any canned chickpeas instead.
- Then blanch your Jackfruit until soft and strain leaving to rest to be used later on.
- Next in a pan, add 2 tsp of vegetable oil followed by all the ingredients.(As shown in picture below)
- Leave it to sweat for 5 mins or so before adding the diced tomatoes.
- Give it a good stir and cover to simmer for 10 mins more.
- Add the 3tsp of Curry powder followed by the Jackfruit and Chana.
- Give it all a good stir and add 1/2 a litre of water to continue the cooking process.
- Salt accordingly.
- After 30 mins more,the Curry should be ready to serve.
- Sprinkle the finely chopped coriander leaves on top for more flavours.
So easy right? The only trouble really is de-seeding and cutting up the Jackfruit. I know some who love to eat them raw as a fruit itself.Especially the seeds! They are absolute delight when ripe and so much fun really. You can on the other hand serve this Curry with hot parathas/flatbreads or even over any rice of your choice. I served mine with flatbreads and a nice coconut chutney on the side.But then I would love to serve mine next time with a Pilaf rice and maybe with some Raita?

I would love to know and learn better ways of having them. I must try the Pulled Pork style Jackfruit sometimes soon. I honestly never tasted it and I am very intrigued really.
