Tandoori Paneer Tikka Masala Curry with Poppadoms

Don’t you just love tandoori ?

I am so attracted to that reddish colour and aroma. I just loveeeee tandoori spice and tandoori roast and basically anything coated in tandoori. So much that at the end I even lick my fingers because I can’t get enough of the taste really. Speaking about tandoori , I wish I had a tandoor! Okay I know it sounds crazy but then just imagine waking up to making your own naan breads or even tandoori roast or chicken tikka or even kebab! Endless possibilities really and the aromas as well as smokiness in the food are to die for trust me.The idea for this recipe came merely because I love paneer and also a good curry. Even though making paneer does require some practice until you get the consistency right, it shouldn’t stop you from trying until you get it right. So if ever you have difficulty, please do not hesitate to write to me.

Serves 5

Preparation time : 5 hours

  • 1 cup of finely chopped white Onion
  • 400g of Tomato (pureed)
  • 2 tsp of Curry powder
  • 3 cloves of Garlic
  • 2 Cloves
  • 1 plain low fat Yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp of Ginger paste
  • Cooking cream
  • Pinch of Cinnamon powder
  • Pinch of Nutmeg powder
  • Thyme
  • Coriander leaves/Parsley
  • Salt/Pepper
  • Vegetable oil

Ingredients for the Tandoori Masala :

  • 2 tsp of Curry powder
  • 2 tsp of Freshly ground Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp of Coriander powder
  • 3 tsp of Paprika powder
  • 1 tsp of Fenugreek powder
  • 1 tsp of Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp of Red Chilli powder/Flakes
  • 1/2 a tsp of Fennel powder/seeds

  • Start off by making the paneer first.
    1. In a large saucepan, dilute the milk into the water and stir continuously for about 5 mins on a medium heat.
    2. Leave the mixture to a boiling point which will basically be at around 30 mins after.
    3. Add the lime juice and leave it for 10 mins more.
    4. Strain in a muslin cloth and leave to rest until all the water is drained out from the curd.
    5. Place in the fridge for 4 hours approx. to rest so that the curd cheese firms up.
  • Next cut the paneer into desired cube sizes.

  • In a plate add all the tandoori spices along with plain yogurt and mix everything together until a paste is obtained.

  • Next coat the paneer one at a time into the paste and leave to rest so that the flavours are well absorbed.

  • On a griddle pan or non stick pan, drizzle a tsp of oil and then grill/fry the paneer.

  • Remove and set aside while you make the curry.

  • In a non stick pan, heat some oil and then add the onions, ginger, garlic, thyme, cloves and sweat until golden brown.

  • Pour in the tomato puree along with the curry powder as well as pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg and leave to slow cook for 15 mins by adding 1 cup of water to the sauce.
  • When the puree starts to bubble up, add the paneer and salt accordingly.
  • Next add the cooking cream and leave to simmer for 5 mins more.
  • imageTurn gas off and leave to cool down for 10 mins more before serving with crunchy poppadoms and rice.
  • Garnish with some coriander leaves or parsley on top for more flavours.

You will love it really! The soft tender paneer falling apart into your mouth and the smooth texture melting its way through your taste buds! I am a great fan of a good Curry but then paneer is my most favourite to have especially with hot butter Naan breads. Yum! No wonder why everybody loves Indian Food! This dish goes very well with a Peas Pilaf – ”Mattar Pulao ” or even with a fragrant Cumin Rice – ”Jeera Rice” along with some green chilli-lime chutney and some other side dish like mixed vegetable curry. Oh I am already drooling to be honest. Food is my soft spot really, so much that this is what I do all day long – Dream of it and plenty of it.

One more thing I like to make out of paneer is paneer skewers with some beautiful colourful veggies along. This is also equally yum and make the perfecto starters especially if you are having vegetarian guests at home.So many different things you can make out of paneer, even sweets like barfi. What are the things you like to make at yours with paneer? I would love to know and learn maybe new ways of having paneer. Do not forget to write to me to share your love for paneer as well.

See you soon for yet another recipe and have a great start of the week you all.
