Hellooooo from the Gros Pois side!
Gros Pois is T H E Life!! Aren’t they? No? Oops I guess I got a little too hyped then because I just lurrrrveeeeeee Gros Pois either in a Curry or Fricassee. Butter Beans or ”Gros Pois” as so fondly being called here in Mauritius, is certainly the one Curry on the menu that readily makes you go all merry-happy just by the sound of it. Simply because this is the Curry that binds us all to many great moments of love shared among family. I certainly do have so many sweet reminiscences linked to it. Also Butter Beans Curry is a quite a common food staple in our traditional Mauritian eating culture because of its creamy,rich and fulfilling taste that ends up always being a crowd pleaser dish. So much that with time it has become the tradition of even keeping a special day of the week for it. At mine Mum has always been making Gros Pois Curry on a Thursday and we ultimately call it ”Le Gros Pois Thursday”.
A lot of other people that I know especially my friends, even they say their Mums keep Thursday as the Gros Pois day. No need to add that when you speak of Gros Pois here, the absolute delight that follow afterwards is none other than our glorious flatbreads – ”Faratas” or Parathas as commonly being known. On that very particular day, we would all be so looking forward to dinner.Oh mine the slightly burnt Faratas smell on the stove,the fondant rich Curry flavour rising and the gorgeous Chicken fricassee(a dish of stewed or fried pieces of meat served in a thick tomato sauce) aromas that would be coming from the kitchen that very day, is simply jaw dropping!! I would always have 2 servings of the Curry on that day and Mum would scold me, telling me that I will grow fat if I continue to eat Gros Pois. And I know totally ignore her and speak out loud – Gros Pois, you are my life!Come to me. Haha.
The use of drumsticks is optional really but then I wanted to give it the old times, memoir look ,by adding the drumsticks to the Curry. However the most common way of making it in all its splendour is by adding big chunky pieces of potatoes. Some will also add aubergines,chayottes,gourd or even squash to slow cook with the Curry. It is all up to you really how you prefer to have yours. I only wanted to show you the endless of possibilities really that you can combine with this Curry. And that is the beauty of homecooking,anything is really the star as long as you add love.
Preparation time : 35 mins
Cooking time : 25 mins
- 300g of butter beans
- 2-3 drumsticks
- 150g of tomato puree/paste
- 4 big spoonful of curry powder ( Masala )
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 curry leaves
- 2 dry red chillies
- 1 medium sized onions finely sliced
- 1 tsp of cumin seeds/powder
- 1/2 a tsp of ginger paste
- 1/2 a tsp of fenugreek seeds
- bunch of coriander leaves
- vegetable oil
- Wash and soak the butter beans in 1ltr of water for approx. 3 hours beforehand.
Note: You can also soak it overnight but then 2-3 hours is enough.
- In a pressure cooker or in a heavy based sauce pan , put the butter beans to cook for around 30 mins or until soft and mushy.
- Reserve the preboiled butter beans to be used later.
- In another pan , blanch the drumsticks and reserve this as well.
- Heat your pan with some vegetable oil and start by sweating onions,garlic/ginger,curry leaves,thyme,cumin seeds,fenugreek seeds and dry red chillies for the Curry gravy.
- After 10 mins , add the tomato puree/paste and combine together.
- Next add the curry powder to the tomato paste along with 1/2 a cup of water until a thick masala paste is obtained.
- Now pour in the pre boiled butter beans and drumsticks into the curry paste and give it a good stir.
- Salt accordingly and leave to simmer for 25 mins while giving it a constant stir.
Mmmmm happiness is a big bowl of Gros Pois really! It’s like you want to dive in straight away and feel it’s warmth. Such a heart filling and heart warming dish really that will leave you on could nine with a big smile after dinner time. Served with hot Puris or Faratas/Parathas (which reminds me I really need to do a blog post for that as this has been on request quite a few times now). You might also serve the Curry over a bed of white fragrant basmati rice along with a variety of side dishes like sauteed pumpkin, ”rougaille soya”or maybe a good sauteed liver along with a crunchy salad. I mean this Curry can be accompanied by any side dish really and can also be eaten on its own as a main only. I love keeping it simple by eating it along with a nice coconut chutney and ”touffer brede” – leafy green vegetables sauteed in garlic and dry red chillies.
I know this is a favourite for many and we are all somehow or the other bound to this creamy, rich and hearty Curry. And not only does it bring back the great love shared with families but also shows how simple humble pulses can be added to our diet in many ways.Because to note that butter beans are healthy carbs and also very rich in proteins.
